No, I am sorry – he really is just a friend who I wanted to meet again.

Hmmm, that’s a pity. Then it seems like we have to talk about already finished projects - for example your new DVD “Black Symphony” which just was released. Just tell something about it…

It took place in the “Ahoy”-Stadium in Rotterdam in February this year. We played a huge gig for maybe 10.000 fans, with a big, professional Dutch orchestra (Metropole Orchestra, leading Jules Buckley) und a opera-choir (Pa´dam), live on stage. – “Black Symphony” was for us the point where everything went together. All the experience we made the last years on tour and while the recording of the albums. And we never had played live with an orchestra before … okay, at the albums, in the studio we already worked together with some orchestras, but never before live on stage. We often said: “We want to do this, but only when we can do it really good.” We never looked for a small orchestra, we searched for a really big one, so that we have a good sound in the end. And then there was the chance and for us it was a very exciting moment in our live. Even now the emotions come up when we watch the DVD… or the BlueRay … you have to know, I bought a BlueRay-Player and a new, big flat screen TV just because of the DVD, it is awesome!

Was the purchase worthwhile?

Of course! The quality is awesome and in this way the atmosphere of the gig come back really intensive – I think that the fans which wasn’t there have now also the chance to get into it. I mean this was our dream – and our dream became true and was recorded. On the DVD there are now two hours of footages of this gig and also 45 minutes bonus footages from another concert which we gave in Eindhoven and a lot of backstage-material.

Did you played also new songs at this gig?

No, the only really new thing on the DVD beside the orchestra is that we gave a big band-interview for the first time, which will give, in my opinion, a new point of view on Within Temptation. We speak a long time really intimate about the band and about the long way to “Black Symphony”. The songs were a section trough all our released albums, so not really new. But we played some of the songs a bit different, we played some of them “unplugged” and then there were also two great duets with guests: Anneke van Giersbergen (Ex-The Gathering) and Keith Caputo. We never had done this before. And of course all the songs were new arranged for the gig with the orchestra…

Is it different to change the songs for the orchestra?

Not really. I mean on the last albums we already worked together with orchestras, so many of the arrangements already exist. And you shouldn’t imagine two different things – at least all compositions consist of notes and chords, so it doesn’t matter if you compose for a band or for a orchestra. But it is fascinating that when you want to combine both things, you have to find a good mixture. An orchestra is very impressive and send much information’s to the ear. The ear has to handle all that information’s so that a band can go under very fast – the same happens with a single vocalist and a choir. So we changed the songs with help, because we want to be sure that in the end it sounds great on the stage… they should sound better then in original – orchestra and choir have to play in gallery but without pull us or Sharon down.
In the “The Heart of Everything” we had to fit the orchestra and choir completely new. And the result was a really homogeneous sound. Not only “band plus orchestra”, it is one sound and really natural.

One week before the release you had something like a preview-event, what exactly happened there?

This was the DVD-, or rather BlueRay premiere. “Black Symphony” was showed in a cinema in Amsterdam and fans had the chance to win tickets for it in the media – of course we had a nice premiere celebration after it.

So it was an event like the start of a movie – were there also some celebrities… beside of you of course?

*laughs* Yes, there really were some celebrities – but nothing to compare with the premiere of a movie for sure. And it shouldn’t become something like that, because it ought to be a fan/band-event for some hundred people, but nothing more.

And how did the fans react?

Great! And we were just overwhelmed from the reaction, because you never know it before… You play this concert and then you work on the footages and nobody can tell you if the fans will like it in the end. So the fans made us very happy on the premiere.

The DVD-project is now finished – isn’t it the time to begin to work on a new album?

*laughs* We just begun with it… after the DVD-thing we had a small break and now we really begin to work on a new album.

So you make no longer break/holidays?

To work on a new album is like holidays!

But don´t you do other things in you’re free time…?

Yes of course. We all have our hobbies and supposedly we like to do things that other people also like to do. Go out, drinking some bears, watching movies and listening to music. I for myself like to do sports, as other band members also did: tennis, football soccer are high in vote.

Do you also play computer-games?

Yes, I love it! It’s a pity that I haven’t too much time for it. I get a new game, play it for maybe two hours – and until I have time too play it again there is again another ne game which is even better…

Not good for an advancement in the “WoW” universe…

… I played this game for exactly eight hours *laughs* I didn’t managed so much.

You already wrote music for a computer-game, especially for “Spellborn…

Yes this was a great inspire, because they had a whole story. A big book with ideas and impressions which you can use for the music. This was really cool.

What about movie-music. I think this would be a great thing for you, wouldn’t it?

We would love to do this, of course, but until now we haven’t done. Two of our songs were already used, but we never wrote something special for cinema or TV. But I think at the moment we we’re on such a thing, although I can’t tell you something about it at the moment.

Ok, which style of movie you would choose - fantasy?

Well, it must fit to our music. A bit dark and magical note must be in it, of course – I can’t believe that we could do great music for a comedy movie.

Back to the “new” album – do you already know the date of the release?

Well, as fast as we can. But till now we are just at the beginning and we want to do something really special this time. Maybe it will be a concept-album, but at the moment all those things are just ideas how it could be … and when we are sure about those thing, then it will take the time it needs. One year would be cool – and when it will take for years then we also can’t changed it. The main point is that the album sound great in the end.

And what about touring?

We try to make a small “Black Symphony”-tour, which will also lead it us to Germany and Austria. We want to take a orchestra and a choir with us. When everything is arranged then you can read it on our website.

A tour with gigs like Black Symphony? This would be a great thing – then I hope that you will arrange it as fast as possible. I hope the DVD success and I want to thank you for the interview and that you get trough the traffic without an accident.

No problem. *laughs* But now I have to go inside the house in the toilette very fast otherwise there’ll be a disaster in the end.
